Differences Between Brakes and Fenders

We basically differentiate between two types of fenders on stunt scooters:

  • Flex Fenders (Brakes or Brakes)
  • Rigid Fenders (commonly called Fenders)

Brakes, also known as Flex Fenders, are part of the standard equipment of every stunt scooter or stunt scooter deck.

Rigid Fenders are fenders that are used instead of a brake. They are not bendable and therefore not suitable for braking. Rigid fenders are designed to prevent you from accidentally landing on your rear wheel while riding and jumping. Accidental braking can lead to falls. For those who do not want to ride with brakes, a rigid fender is a sensible alternative.

Materials and Functionality of Flex Fenders

Flex Fenders (brakes) are made entirely of steel or a steel-nylon mix. When the fender is pressed, it presses against the rear wheel and creates friction to slow down or stop the scooter. Steel brakes are robust but require more force. They are made of flexible spring steel, which is attached directly to the deck in front of the rear wheel. Nylon brakes have a small steel core. Therefore, they are lighter and "softer", but they can wear out faster.

For completeness, we also mention spring brakes. These are very commonly used on folding scooters but are no longer used on high-quality stunt scooters. Spring brakes brake very easily and therefore wear down your wheel quickly.

Brakes are considered wear parts and are therefore excluded from any warranty. Due to overheating, unilateral braking, falls, and many other factors, brakes can easily break. In general, this is not due to a material defect.

Important Considerations Before Purchase

Before purchasing brakes and fenders, it is important to ensure that they fit your deck. Each brand has its own way of mounting the fenders. You should also make sure that the fender is large enough for your wheels, otherwise, they will rub against each other. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us.

Brakeless Riding

Another consideration is whether you need a brake or flex fender at all. So-called brakeless riding is very popular with park riders. This makes the deck even lighter and behaves differently. However, we usually only recommend brakeless riding to advanced riders. For safety reasons, you should at least install a rigid fender.

FAQ: Brakes & Fenders for Stunt Scooters

What are the benefits of flex fender brakes?

Flex fender brakes have the advantage over a spring brake that they do not trigger a braking effect through accidental light contact with the brake. When jumping with the stunt scooter, it is essential to brake deliberately with stronger pressure. Flex fenders thus reduce the risk of falls and protect the rubber of the rear wheel.

How do I install fenders on my stunt scooter?

Fenders are usually installed by attaching screws to the deck of the scooter. First, you need to remove the rear wheel and possibly the old fender as well. Now you can insert and screw in your new fender. Finally, reinstall the rear wheel. Done!
