A headset (steering set or head bearing) is an important component of the steering system of a stunt scooter. It consists of bearings and seals that are installed in the head tube of the deck. It allows the bar and the fork to rotate smoothly.
There are two main types of headsets:
Integrated headsets are built into the deck, while non-integrated headsets require a separate bearing housing. These integrated decks have so-called built-in cups. The individual headsets can be easily installed. Fewer parts need to be installed, and the headset runs much more stably. They offer a closed steering bearing construction that is particularly stable and allows for optimal rotation. For a high-quality stunt scooter, you should definitely opt for an integrated headset.
Additionally, there are sealed and unsealed bearings. Sealed bearings are protected from dirt and moisture, which extends their lifespan and makes maintenance easier. Integrated headsets typically always have sealed bearings. Unsealed bearings are more open and susceptible to dirt, and are usually found in non-integrated headsets.
Choosing the right headset depends on the head tube of your deck. If you have an integrated deck, you need an integrated headset. For non-integrated decks, you need a non-integrated headset.
A headset requires little maintenance, but it is important to regularly oil the ball bearings. The headset in your deck consists of two bearings, one top and one bottom. A drop of bearing oil on each bearing from the outside and a few turns of the handlebar are usually sufficient. You don't even have to disassemble it. For optimal results, professionals can occasionally disassemble the parts, clean them, and grease the bearings to better protect them from dirt.
It is important that your scooter does not stay wet for too long. If it gets wet, bring it quickly to a warm place where it can dry. Never leave your scooter outside overnight, as moisture can damage the headset.
To install a new headset, you first need to remove the old bearing. Then clean the headset cups thoroughly and insert the new bearings into the head tube of the deck. Make sure everything is properly aligned before reattaching the fork and handlebar. It can be helpful to use a little grease to ensure smooth movement.
Keep your headset clean and well lubricated. Regularly check the bearings and replace them if necessary. Regular maintenance ensures a longer lifespan and better performance.
If your handlebar no longer rotates smoothly, makes noise, or has play in the head tube, this could be a sign that the headset needs to be replaced.
