A stunt scooter, also known as a freestyle or trick scooter, is a specially designed scooter made for tricks and stunts. Unlike conventional folding scooters, stunt scooters are not height-adjustable and cannot be folded. They have reinforced components to withstand the extreme stresses of jumping.
It is important to choose a stunt scooter that matches your individual needs and skills. When selecting a stunt scooter, you should consider various factors, including:
Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or professional, whether for the skate park or in the street scene – you will find the right stunt scooter for every level with us. Since we ride scooters ourselves every day, only scooters that meet our high standards are included in our range. We also work closely with the world's best scooter brands, which originate directly from the scooter scene. You can find even more help for assembling your stunt scooter under our buying guide.
When it comes to riding styles, street scooters and park scooters are distinguished. In park riding, ramps in skate parks are used to perform tricks like barspins, tailwhips, or classics like buttercup and bri flips. Park scooters are therefore built as light and compact as possible. Titan handlebars are particularly popular for park riding.
In street riding, spots like streets, stairs, and handrails of stair railings, as well as obstacles like curbs and rails in skate parks, are very popular. Street scooters have larger and even more stable components like wide decks, sturdy steel bars, and wide wheels.
Consider whether you want to buy a ready-made stunt scooter (stunt scooter complete) or prefer to assemble a stunt scooter yourself. For beginners, we recommend stunt scooter completes, as they are all-rounder models that offer a better price-performance ratio. You will find this in the Completes category in our webshop. When looking at a complete, first pay attention to the height of the scooter. It should be at waist height. Of course, you can shorten the handlebars at any time or have us shorten them for you so that they fit you. Also, pay attention to the length of the deck. Keep in mind that if you have smaller shoe sizes, you will need a shorter deck.
Advanced riders and professionals like to assemble a stunt scooter tailored to their specific needs – although there are also complete professional scooters. For custom scooters, it's best to check the Parts category for suitable parts. The exact instructions on how to assemble your stunt scooter can be found in the service area.
The perfect size of your scooter depends on how you want to use it. As a pure sports device for beginners and park riders, the handlebars should be slightly shorter, while for an everyday device, the handlebar height can be higher. The weight of the scooter is also an important factor, as a stunt scooter should be as light as possible. A good guideline for this is 3-4 kg. Of course, color also plays a major role. To filter the parts in your desired colors, for your age, your budget, etc., the filter function in our webshop will help you.
The important parts of a stunt scooter include the deck, the bar (handlebars), the fork, the wheels, the compression system, and a headset. Since each individual part plays a crucial role in the performance and durability of the scooter, we recommend that you do not skimp on quality.
What to pay special attention to when choosing individual parts:
For smaller children, wheels can have a diameter of 100 mm, while for children from 9 years and adults, a diameter of 110-120 mm is suitable. The core of the wheel should be made of aluminum. Cheap products contain plastic and therefore break easily – we do not carry these in our range. For a scooter primarily used for everyday travel, we recommend wheels with a diameter of 120 mm, as they are significantly faster and more comfortable.
If you also want to use your stunt scooter for everyday travel, the handlebars can be a bit higher. Specifically, they can be at navel height or even above the navel. This way, you can use the handlebars for years while you grow. However, if you mainly use your stunt scooter for tricks, you will need more control, and we recommend riding the handlebars at waist height.
Compression systems have evolved from threaded (with simple external threads) to more stable integrated compression systems. We recommend threaded compression systems only for children who occasionally make small jumps. For everyone else, we recommend professional compression systems like IHC, HIC, and SCS, as they are not only more stable but also easier to tighten.
If you plan to jump regularly with your stunt scooter, make sure that your headset is integrated, as this is significantly smoother and more stable. Non-integrated headsets are recommended only for children who occasionally make small jumps. For more information on individual parts or spare parts, check our Parts category.
Stunt scooters have undergone a remarkable evolution. The stunt scooter sport itself was born around the year 2000. At that time, scooter pioneers like Helmeri Pirinen, Terry Price, and Matt Mckeen began performing stunts with conventional folding scooters. The stability of today’s stunt scooters was far from what they had, and so these scooters were gradually modified by the riders themselves. Initially, even the rods from shopping carts were installed in scooters to increase their stability. Over time, the first scooter blogs (e.g., Scooter Resource, Inside Scooters) emerged, and riders shared their videos online. This quickly gained momentum in the scene, and early manufacturers like MGP, Blunt, District, Tilt, and many others began developing stunt scooters. They laid the foundation for the high-quality stunt scooters we ride today. A huge game changer was the first wheels with a metal core from brands like Scorpo, Eagle, and Metalcore. These replaced the conventional wheels with plastic cores. Stunt scooters became more refined – they became lighter, wider, larger, and more stable. The year 2009 ushered in the first hype around stunt scooter riding. Scooter professionals like Ryan Williams, Jake Clarke, Brendon Smith, and many more pushed the limits higher. Their videos impressed riders worldwide and led to a massive change in skate parks. To this day, stunt scooters are indispensable in skate parks.
Compared to folding scooters, stunt scooters offer the advantage of being stable, lightweight, and durable. Therefore, you can use your stunt scooter for everyday journeys, like going to school or visiting friends. If it is a branded product, you can replace any individual part. It is essential that a stunt scooter can rotate 360°, making barspins and tailwhips possible. Additionally, in terms of design, stunt scooters are usually more appealing to children than folding scooters and are therefore preferred by youth.
The most important accessories for stunt scooters are undoubtedly a helmet and knee pads, and if you practice the sport intensively, a mouthguard may also be necessary. For beginners, ankle guards have proven useful, as the deck often accidentally strikes the ankle while practicing the tailwhip, which can be very painful. Other accessories include a base stand and a lock if you want to park your scooter at school, for example. If you want to grind on stone or concrete, you need your own skate wax. Oil for lubricating the bearings and tools for tightening the axles and the compression system complete your gear.
Which stunt scooters are suitable for beginners?
Typical stunt scooters for beginners are pre-assembled scooters, known as stunt scooter completes. These are all-round models that are particularly well-suited for getting started in scooter sports. Beginners need to try things out and develop their preferences. Another advantage is that completes offer a lot for their price, giving you a well-balanced stunt scooter. Therefore, it usually makes sense to assemble a custom scooter only when you are more advanced and familiar with your tricks.
How much does a good stunt scooter cost?
A good stunt scooter complete costs between 150 and 250 euros. For devices under 100 euros, you should assume that they are essentially toys and not acceptable sports equipment. As an advanced rider or professional putting together a custom stunt scooter, you can expect to pay 300 to 600 euros or more—there are practically no limits in this range.
What distinguishes a stunt scooter from a conventional scooter?
Stunt scooters are generally lighter, have a more robust construction with reinforced parts, and offer improved steering and agility for tricks and stunts. Stunt scooters cannot be folded. The handlebars are made as a single piece and cannot be adjusted in height. Another important criterion is that the handlebars can rotate 360°.
What tricks can I perform with a stunt scooter?
With a stunt scooter, you can perform a variety of tricks, including grinds, barspins, and flips. The possibilities are nearly endless and depend on your skill level and creativity. All tricks can be combined, allowing you to develop your own style over time.
How can I maintain and care for my stunt scooter?
To keep your stunt scooter in the best possible condition, you should regularly check the screws, tighten the axle nuts and the compression, lubricate the headset bearings and wheels, and clean or replace the grip tape. Regular maintenance not only extends the lifespan of your scooter but also ensures optimal performance.
What is the appropriate height for a stunt scooter?
The handlebars should end about a hand's width below the navel. For beginners, the handlebars can be a bit higher, especially if you also want to use the stunt scooter for everyday rides. We are happy to adjust the height of your handlebars in our workshop.
Will my complete stunt scooter be delivered pre-assembled?
Yes, complete stunt scooters are generally delivered pre-assembled, so you can start riding right away.
Are Apollo and NKD scooters good stunt scooter brands?
We often get asked what we think about brands like Apollo or NKD. We don't say that these brands offer bad scooters, but from our perspective, the price-performance ratio is better with some other brands. We only carry brands that come directly from the scooter scene. Many of these brands were founded by scooter riders themselves and have been supporting the scooter sport for years. Since we have been part of the scooter scene from the beginning, we prefer brands that take the same path and share our vision.
